"Go reserve..."
Go reserve, active duty is not worth it unless you want a full term career of being underpaid and restricted from life. If you do go active make sure you only sign up for 4 years... to see if you like it. Was this answer helpful?

Someone said: it sounds like the person who wrote the first statement just signed the papers at the reserve recruiters office. the fact is that both reserves and active have their plus and minus points. good thing about the reserves is you get a little extra money (very little), it pays for some college, and you don't have to move completely away from mommy and daddy's house unless you get deployed, it is easier to join the reserves (lower standards). the good things about active duty are you get paid pretty good. you start at $1467 each month plus free housing or housing money, plus free food or food money. you get to leave home and travel. you get free college while serving plus the GI bill for when you get out. plus free health and dental insurance and the fact that you have a job that will always be there. the things that are not so good about the reserves are: your life really doesn't change much. you don't leave home. you still have to keep that same crappy job at Wal-Mart because you only start out at $180 each month no housing money and no food money. you must pay for your health insurance. the bad about being active is the same as the good. you must leave home, and you will travel and you have a job that have to go to. to make it simple go by this simple rule
if you love your life but just need a little extra money or a little help with college but you really don't want to change much of anything go with the reserves
if you need a real change, real job, good pay, to travel and basically a over haul of your life or a jump start to improve your life go active. both are good options for the right people. be smart talk to people that are in the Air Force already and get their input. don't take every recruiters word for it. most of them don't lie but may forget to tell you something. if any recruiter you talk to starts to trash talk then leave because all that means is they don't beleive in what they have so they are trying just make the others sound bad. do some real soul searching and if it really sounds like something you want to do then make the best of it. i have spent 8 years in the Active duty Air Force and love it. i have meet people i don't like and have had bad days no matter where you work or what you do you will have bad days. Good Luck!
Someone said: Sorry but The insurance IS NOT free...Tricare is damn it expensive.
Someone said: Tricare is FREE. Married to an active duty soldier w/babies and we have never had to pay for a doctor bill or prescription as long as I get the prescription filled at a military installation
Someone said: Tricare is FREE!! Active duty for 6 years, w/3 children and I have never paid for any medical care! How about u know what your talkin about before you answer. People want honest answers not what u "think" is correct!
Someone said: I just paid $198 for my wifes physical because tricare didn't cover it. There is a premium u have to pay for ur dependents
Someone said: not so true...doctor visits nd prescriptions are free on base..u only have to pay like 6 bucks wen fillng a prescriptilon off base at a walmart or walgreens we will say..dental only covers 1200 a year nd they dont cover full dental work at that..u will pay 50% of dental work nd 40% of major dental work so its not completely free..they dont cover eye eams or glasses so the medical isnt all that great but itsa good for those who have no type of insurance at all....nd you should kno what ur talkng about b4 u answer cuz evrythng isnt free
Someone said: You are all correct. TriCare offers several different plans. Tricare Prime is what most people opt for- it offers "free" services when they are rendered by your PCP (both on and off the installation), and pre-approved services from specialty doctors. There are other plans that you do have to pay a co-pay and/or a premium. The best thing for you to do would be to go into your nearest TriCare office or just go to there website.
Someone said: what you talking about when you go active you get free food free housing: have you been active??? when you in active duty if you single you get charge for the food that you eat or don't eat so that's $260 a month housing if you single yeah you get a room that you have to share, you dont pay for it, if you married and live on post you dont get any for housing and something my brigade is doing when ever you go to training and you eat there you get charge $5. Also you say that you get pay good are you crasy in active duty you espend working more them 80 hours a week and get pay check of 1600 as E-4 or SPC if you do the mat that is $5 per hour and that is only if you spend 80 hour because sometimes you spend more than that. If you dont know what you talking about please dont say anything.
Someone said: Go active reserve! known as AR time. I was an E-3 making an E-5's pay for over 2 years! Almost 2G's every two weeks.
Someone said: How and what is that??
Someone said: There's a lot about benefits and no benefits. I guess, that if you're just looking for some perks go reserves. You still are subject to all the rules tho, and are required to act like a service member ALL the time. But its not the armed forces and will never even come close to resembling what its like to serve actively with a unit. Going active is more than just benefits; its a change of lifestyle.
Now some people are talking about you getting charged for food you eat or don't eat or the housing stipend that they simply don't give you....don't listen to them. The amount of food you can eat for the amount the simply don't put on your check is ridiculous. And the money you don't get for living on base is equally as great for being able to live somewhere with all utilities included. You shouldn't expect a free ride, just like you would expect to work somewhere and just live at your employers house for free. I did active duty and the benefits were the cherry on top...you really can't beat them. I moved on and now I do the reserves to stay in touch with it and it has its perks to and fits where I am in my life now...so really its what you want and how it fits into your life goals. Good luck.
Someone said: i agree that guy done lost his mind lmao
Someone said: hey ima go agr to then as a e4 ima make e6 pay hell yea
Someone said: I've been in for five years and I know this much. Every branch is treated differently. Some work harder for the money and some have a cake job. You get paid the same active duty depending on years in and pay grade. There are many great benefits in tricare and active duty service members get free medical. Dependents get free care on base but have to pay for medical supplies used. Example: Wife goes in to get dental done: the labor is free but you have to pay for the medicine and all items life fillings and caps ect. There are other options you can get for dependents also you just have to look it up. Like if your wife wants a boob job "in the navy" she is allowed one cosmetic surgery that is free. You have to find the instruction allowing this. You can also get one free for yourself being active. Like lasik eye surgery. Make sure you do your homework. there are a lot of good things you can find. Military wont tell you because if less people know less people use it and more can take advantage over time who do thier homework.
