"They can still claim you as a dependent because you are only 19 and..."

You can go straight directly to www.irs.gov to confirm this. But I believe that they can still claim you as a dependent because you are only 19 and even if you earn more than $3800 for the year.

They cannot claim you as a dependent, because you turned 25 in the year 2012. Sorry....

The only way they could claim you is if one of the following are true:

At the end of the filing year, your child was younger than you (or your spouse if you file a joint return) and younger than 19.

At the end of the filing year, your child was younger than you (or your spouse if you file a joint return) younger than 24 and a full-time student.

At the end of the filing year, your child was any age and permanently and totally disabled.

You should claim yourself. If you went to college all year you`ll be able to get back the 40% of the AOC credit which will be $1000.00 if you claim your tuition expenses plus you`ll get back your federal withholdings. Your parents can not get the 40% refundable portion of the AOC. I go to college also and I always make sure I file my own taxes, and I always get back at least $1000.00 plus my federal withholdings.

"Someone else can claim you as a dependent on their taxes..."

You would need to file as SINGLE just like you thought. Make sure when you file your taxes that you mark the box that someone else can claim you as a dependent on their taxes. If you didn`t make more than $5,950, you do not need to file your taxes. If you made less than that and want to file because you paid in federal taxes, you can do that. You may still be entitled to a refund.

Parents can claim only if your daughter is:

Under age 19 at the end of the year, under age 24 AND a full-time student for at least five months of the year, or she could be any age and totally and permanently disabled (which doesn`t seem to be the case).

Yes, they can still claim you as a dependent being that you live underneath their roof and more than likely did not make more than them....also since you will not be filing as the head of household.

You still have to file taxes, but you have to be sure to use a 1040 reporting method and mark the box that asks if anyone else can claim you on their taxes.

No you can not. You can either by your parents as a dependent on their taxes OR claim yourself on your taxes. Not both.

 Someone said: Yes you can. If you work you file your taxes and on the form it asks can someone else claim you as a dependent on their tax return. You answer yes. You may get less of a refund than the full amount you normally would get, such as my brother got $75 less, but still collected a refund of $500. Hope this helps.
